Has God Evolved?

Those who read my review of Denis Edwards’s How God Acts, Chapter 6, will know that I was very much inspired by the idea that in assuming flesh, the Word also takes the processes of creation into God. In Chapter 7, Edwards writes:

In Jesus of Nazareth, God becomes a vital part of all the interconnected systems and physical processes of our planet, part of the evolutionary history of life on Earth, part of the story of the expanding and evolving universe. God embraces all this in order to bring it to its completion. (p. 123).

This quotation is as good a summary of Edwards’s position on God and evolution as any. Could Edwards’s insight feed a theology of providence in which God is properly said first to exercise providence over Godself, in so far as God gives God to Godself in eternity? Of course, I could be disappearing up my own bum thinking like this, but … well, let me think about this some more, and in 2054 I might publish on this idea!
