If we suppose that human agents extend the work of salvation
in the sacraments without reference to Christ, we blunder. If, however, we
reject the idea that human beings and human agency are drawn into the work of
salvation at all – so, for instance, as to reject a sacramental approach – then
we are in just as much danger of missing what the Incarnation was about, only
in the opposite direction. Once the Word has become flesh, the domain of divine
action is found among human beings and is given to human beings: in a
remarkable way, it is placed into our hands.
